This patch looks good on the Perl side of things (as in: it's the
shortest path to code that behaves the same as it used to, but is
accepted by a recent Perl interpreter).

I think the code would be a bit more robust / future-proof if it
localized @_ before assigning to it. Paul, what do you think?
