The upstream diff for that particular fix might be really small and targeted. What you're asking us to unblock is quite a bit more than that.
Aside from the upstream changes including more changes, to do with "content hooks" and some others, the packaging also includes a change to short-form dh and source format 3.0 (quilt); neither of those are appropriate things to be doing during a freeze (at least for packages you expect to transition).
