dpkg already takes care of removing those files during purge (as well as foo~,
foo% and foo.bak).

$ grep -A1 -r REMOVECONFFEXTS lib/dpkg/
lib/dpkg/dpkg.h:#define REMOVECONFFEXTS    "~", ".bak", "%", \
lib/dpkg/dpkg.h-                           DPKGTEMPEXT, DPKGNEWEXT, DPKGOLDEXT, DPKGDISTEXT
