My initial query is "why wasn't this cross-posted to debian-ruby?"  

Please excuse my possible ignorance, but are you active in Ruby package
maintenance in Debian currently?  The only posts I could find from you
on debian-ruby this year are "here's a patch to move to 1.9 by default".
