Direct modification of the upstream tarball seems to be overkill for
this task. Then, it's better to keep things as is. I don't want to
convert the package for stable to unmaintanable mess.
I wasn't suggesting modifying the upstream tarball.
What I was suggesting was: start from an unpacked copy of the source
package (e.g. after "dpkg-source -x"); modify the affected source files;
rebuild the package. The changes will end up in the .diff.gz.
As an example, see

the new version was created by modifying the source files.
