This bug is confirmed fixed in hplip -3 which was uploaded some time ago to 
unstable but rejected from migration due to the large changes from -1 which is 
currently in lenny. I agree it is a serious bug.

Would you like me to provide a -4 that walks back most of the changes in -2/-3 
or would debian-release be in a position to reconsider unfreezing -3?
