Hi, please consider updating ttf-dejavu to 2.14-1 it is mainly intended to fix #408311 which causes text rendered using the sans-oblique variant to look bad. IMHO it would be quite bad to have such problems in Etch with a font used by so many people; note that the problem affects also the graphical-installer (and was actually reported by fjp) and is also mentioned in Frans' "D-I RC2 kick-off" [1] message.
