I thought you were talking about user workarounds.
Well, Ubuntu uses fstab labels, and they seem to be quite unstable (my
first experience with them resulted in fsck interrupting boot, leaving you
with a root shell). I wouldn't recommend using them (even if we have to drop
support for USB boot).
