openhpi

Please move openhpi-2.6.2-3, currently in unstable, into the frozen Etch
release. The openhpi source package produces the following binary
packages:

  openhpi
  openhpi-clients
  openhpi-plugin-ipmi
  openhpi-plugin-ipmidirect
  openhpi-plugin-snmp-bc
  openhpi-plugin-sysfs
  openhpid
  libopenhpi2
  libopenhpi-dev

Briefly, 2.6.2-3 is in much better shape than the current 2.5.2-2 which
is in testing. Openhpi is a fairly new package, was not part of Sarge,
and no other packages depend on it, so should not pose a risk to the
Etch release. A more complete (long) justification is provided below:

a) The openhpi package comes from OpenHPI (http://openhpi.org/). The
latest stable release (a few days ago) is 2.8.0. Prior to that, the
latest stable release was 2.6.2 for several months, then 2.6.3 for a
short period of time. Basically, for the past few months, the stable
release was 2.6.2. (Note that the 2.7.x series is a development
series.) So, shipping Etch with the 2.5.2 version would result in a
very out-of-date package.

b) Initial Debian packaging was 2.5.2. At that time, there were license
issues, forcing that version to be in non-free. Those license problems
have been resolved in 2.6.2-2 and beyond. It would be beneficial for
users to have Etch include openhpi in main, rather than non-free.

c) Between the 2.5 and 2.6 versions of openhpi, there were some
structural changes to how it works. If Etch ships with 2.5.2, users
will have to make bigger changes when the next Debian release comes out,
or if they move to testing. Instead, it would be better if the first
Debian version of openhpi already use the newer methods. In particular,
I don't expect that a user will get much support from the upstream
project for a 2.5.x version. This situation will be much improved with
the newer 2.6.2-3 version.

d) Because 2.5.2-2 was non-free, we didn't have autobuilder support.
Therefore, the version currently in frozen Etch lacks binary debs for
many supported architectures. In particular, the current Etch version
is uninstallable on alpha arm hppa m68k mips mipsel s390 sparc. This is
resolved with 2.6.2-3 in unstable.
