To answer the "why" question: At the start of this project, I didn't want to accidentally carry over packaging mistakes (known or otherwise) from the old cyrus-sasl2 package. Also, I wanted the package to be similar to the cyrus-imapd package and I wanted to use dpatch (to make it practically easy for cyrus-imapd maintainers to work on the package). Finally, I wanted to make sure the team would know the package well and take responsible ownership of it. So I decided to start from scratch and then pick good bits from the old package. The package names were chosen with the help of the library packaging guide without much consideration of the old names. At the time (January this year) there were no objections -- apparently it didn't stand out as such a critical issue. Would your objection stand if we were further away from releasing? Anyway, we'll of course follow your advice and rename the packages (thanks to Andreas M. for working out the details) -- but I hope you understand the reasons for wanting to do things right and according to available documentation. -- Fabian Fagerholm <fabbe@paniq.net>
