rdev is doing the same thing, I guess.   A small program (small!
No Emacs Lisp script) should be supplied which does exactly what
is proposed above.

By the way, please don't crosspost between the submit@BTS and a mailing-list.
Use X-Debbugs-Cc for that and let the BTS send the crosspost mail.
