Sound doesn't work at all with this installation on this computer. I used netinst jessie (stable) to install KDE. This is just to inform you as unlucklily I have to change to Mint although I don't like their intransparent non-free policy. Maybe I'll try again in half a year.

I would expect this to be an issue of pulseaudio or alsa, and not particularly of phonon, unless phonon it's using the null backend (which would cause the no sound for kde apps), it forwards the sound requests to it's backends (vlc for the looks of the reported installed packages).

Could you please test playing some sound with vlc directly? if that doesn't work, then the problem is either in vlc or in a lower level.
