when I boot this test system, sddm starts, does start the X server, but the screen remains black. The X server works as expect when launched by other means.

Neither does this, but this is probably a consecuence of the previous error in initialization.
What kind of test system is this? A vm (which?), a real machine? What video card is being used? Is the display connected via HDMI? Which video driver is being used?
