XEmbed is the protocol that allows you to embed a window managed by one toolkit into a window managed by another toolkit, possibly running in another process. For instance this is the code that allows you to have a Qt system tray application inside a gnome desktop (or conversely). This is also what allows us to run a Qt-based djvu viewer as a browser plugin inside mozilla (which is not Qt based.)
