Indeed this is like this by design. If your environment wants an specific qt5 
behavior it should set the right environment variables. As far as I understand 
there is no way to have a default without forcing it on desktops which have 
this present like KDE or Gnome.

I would rater think this is a wishlist bug for those other environments, but 
I'll leave this open to see if anyone else has other ideas.
