I could not reproduce the issue, but this could be related to a different issue regarding globalaccels, where some modifiers are not interpreted in the same way in the systemsettings interface than when you are trying to use them. Could you change the shortcut to something like Meta-n, Meta-m, Meta-j and Meta-k just to test this? Also, if the brightness control device can't be detected the pressed key should be received by the focused application. In konsole, for example, is shown as a sn sm sj and sk.
