As per request of maintainer, submitting new bug here. Note that this is being done from the live DVD.
Made new 64bit install from this DVD. I have complaints about how the partitions were set up but this is irrelevant to kdm.
At first, the system worked perfectly. Then I attempted to upgrade to Sid. As kde packages were being held, I did not upgrade any of these. However, some upgrade rendered kde inoperative. Whenever a login is attempted from kdm, the pane simply blinks and new login offered. The kdm.log complains: "unable to access dbus session ..."
Thinking I needed kde/kdm upgrades as well, succeeded in doing this. So now 4.4.11-* like I had on my previous 32-bit Sid. Problem persists.
First suspicion: No space left on /var. Culprit is not runaway mail files or logs--it is the apt cache. Cleaned that, 55% free. However, the problem persists.
Information below refers to the live DVD. Some of this was upgraded to Sid, triggering the problem.
