Bug#764490: phonon-backend-vlc: backend can't access soundcards with lots of channels / 24 bit only

Package: phonon-backend-vlc
Version: 0.8.0-2
Severity: normal

I use a RME HDSP 9652 with 26 channels. When I try to use VLC via Alsa (Pulseaudio doesn't work at all), I get the message: "alsa audio output error: cannot commit hardware parameters: Operation not permitted"

This is caused by VLC thinking that it could open the RME card in some way that it can't. The RME card can only be opened via the hw:XXXX interface with 24 bit samples and the full channel count. A lot of applications do this the right way (e.g. Aqualung, web browsers etc.).

Could you please me tell me if this is an upstream bug or a debian related bug?
Thank you.
