Note: the original author of this code seems to not be around nowadays and my 
perl foo is → 0.

you mean the substs? they are not even homogeneous across platforms :-/

Sorry, I didn't understood this one (but maybe I need some sleep ;) )

By the way, I don't know if severity: important is the right one here, but 
let's just skip this for the moment and try to get stuff solved :)
