This is normal and intended behaviour.

But they must still be manually unmounted.  In GNOME this can be done
using the eject button that appears next to the device name in Nautilus,
or through the 'Removable Devices' item in the notification area.

I don't know whether KDE makes an eject/safe-removal command obvious.
Is that the problem?
