Bug#662049: phonon: There is no sound at all - audio device is greyed out in configuration

Dear Maintainer,

After recent upgrade of packages sound stopped working. Sound control in KDE
and Phonon configuration in the settings dialog only show Dummy as the active
output device. My real device "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" (internal
soundcard in my Intel chipset) is greyed out.

This occurs on both my laptop and desktop (both Intel, but different chipsets
otherwise). I tried booting into an old kernel, but it hasn't changed anything.
I haven't seen anything suspicious in the log files (but I don't know what I am
looking for).

Regards,
Grzegorz

Do you have pulseaudio installed?

If so, is there any 'pulse*' process running?

How about making a new user and logging in it to see if sound works? Was there a kernel upgrade?
