Bug#659019: step: Can it be changed to use less memory?

Package: step
Version: 4:4.4.5-2
User: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
Usertags: debian-edu

When testing the very nice step application in Debian Edu/Squeeze, the
process eats up all my memory and the machine start trashing.

I normally load the examples one by one, and very quickly the process
is eating up my machines memory and the computer grind to a halt while
paging and filling up swap. I've tested both in Squeeze and Wheezy,
and the processes quickly get several hundred megabytes in resident
size according to top.

Can the step program be changed to use less memory?

The memory usage make the program close to unusable for me.
