Package: kdm
Version: 4:4.4.5-5
Severity: important

One upgrade and two installation of Squeeze Beta 2 with the KDE Desktop have now failed.
The upgrade and first installation failed on a laptop previously running (upto date lenny). This is i386.
The second installation failed on a desktop using amd64.
The previous Squeeze Beta 2 gnome desktop installation on this machine was without problem.

The KDM login screem appears (kdm_greet), I enter user id and password and press return.
Screen goes blank, very briefly a white window appears in the top left of the screen, and then I find myself looking at the tty1 console login.
The kdm_greet process is gone but kdm is still running. However the X session cannot be recovered.

The last 23 lines of Xorg.0.log read:

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support

Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

These lines are not there until the attempted log in.
Both laptop and desktop, unfortunately, have SiS chipsets.
However, I do not believe this is a SiS video driver problem (not in origin, anyway).
I tried configuring xorg.conf with a lower screen resolution without success.

I installed GDM on the desktop machine and configured it as the default window manager. Login successful.
The window in the top left-hand corner of the screen is the Debian KDE settings migration tool (kaboom).
Migration successful. KDE session usuable,

I reconfigured X-11 to start KDM instead of GFM. Login successful.

So it looks like KDM can't start kaboom properly and crashes the X-11 server as a consequence.
Perhaps three bugs in three packages but at the moment the workaround is to replace KDM with GDM, so I'm filing this uder KDM.
