This is a known plasma bug. It works fine with the old (kde 4.0)
knotify popups and with gnome's notification-daemon. Unfortunately I
cannot find the upstream bug number right now, but I am certain that
it has been reported upstream. Rumor has it that the plasma
notification system has been polished in 4.5 and that such layout bugs
have been fixed... I will check it with 4.5 when it has been packaged.
