I refuse to believe that. How are non-technical users supposed to upgrade 
then?
You may say a smart upgrade manager should be used so that it installs the 
major version once all users are logged out if you wish, but it doesn't exist 
yet.

No surprise Debian and Ubuntu use GNOME by default.
