I just discovered kpackage, and it seems very nice.  I am glad to have
something recommend to users who want a package management GUI for Debian.

One thing that seems to be missing is the ability to reconfigure packages
from the UI.  Running dpkg-reconfigure in an xterm or such would be a great
start; eventually, a custom debconf frontend could provide user interaction
within package itself.
