Severity: normal

Hi, I recently noticed kdm_greet took a long time to run on startup, and
lsof indicated that kdm_greet was looking at some TrueType font files
(such as Code2002) for a considerable length of time.

There *may* have been due to some of the TrueType font file names ending
in
.TTF rather than .ttf, so I renamed them.

More likely the problem was due to the font-cache being out-of-date. I
re-ran mkfontscale, mkfontdir and fc-cache against my TrueType fonts
directory and the slow run of kdm_greet disappeared.

Should kdm_greet generate a warning message if it has to bypass the
font-cache?

This may have also been a problem caused by installing
Debian package ttf-mph-2b-damase,
which I later removed to problems with printing.

Dear Arthur,
after reading your bug report it seems to me, that the real culprit are font
packages which don't regenerate the font cache properly. And have such packages
installed you should probably file a bug against that packages. As you can see
from the upstream bug report [0], upstream treats this kind of bugs as »invalid«
and points to the font packages too.

That said I'm now closing this bug report. If your request was only about the
warning, please consider filing a wishlist bug in upstream's bug tracker against
KDM. You should verify before that, that KDE 4.2 doesn't give a notice already.

If you should need further assistance regarding this bug report or my closing
it, please feel free to contact me.

Kind regards,
Kai Wasserbäch
