Installing linux-image-2.6.29-1-686 and upgrading nvidia kernel module nvidia-kernel-2.6.29-1-686 seems to have solved the problem.
I'm not able to reproduce the problem with either of the two ways described in earlier emails.
Please mark the bug as resolved.
