You don't have timidity running as a daemon.

Close any kmid app open.

Edit /etc/default/timidity an uncomment:

# Enable MIDI sequencer (ALSA), default is disabled
TIM_ALSASEQ=true

Then, run invoke-rc.d timidity start and try again.

If it doesn't work, please try with a Debian kernel.
