Hi, 

please see the attached screenshot. The left half is how qtdemo presents
when installed from the Debian package, the right side is from compiling
and installing manually into /usr/local.
The problem seems to be, that you tarred the examples/demos so qtdemo can't
find them, making qtdemo much less useful (It won't present the launch
button for the demos and the examples are completely removed).
I'd propose to not tar the examples and demos and install them to
/usr/share/qt4 (with a link back to /usr/share/doc/qt4-doc/).
Please also note that the examples and demo tarballs contain the build
directories (.obj/release-shared etc.) so you should use the directories
from make install.
