I have had this before, but not very often. All of a sudden
sound playback fails in various programs. Upon examining the 
situation, i find:

$ lsof /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() ext3 file system /dev/.static/dev
      Output information may be incomplete.
COMMAND  PID  USER   FD   TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
kpdf    8583 chenz   70u   CHR 116,16      7512 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p

After quitting kpdf, I can again play audio in other programs.
I have all the sound settings in KDE on the defaults, and I don't 
remember ever seing another KDE program doing this.
