As it turns out, this issue is related to X choosing the wrong mode when first starting (kdm). Subsequently, even after setting the correct mode (via xrandr), font sizes are not what they are supposed to be. I now force the correct mode with a Modeline and PreferredMode in xorg.conf, which seems to fix the font problems as well. cheers, Christian
