Well, somehow I managed to fix things.

Boinc somehow got confused, and in trying to track that down, I 
noticed my /var partition was completely full.  When I looked at 
what files were in /log, I seen that /var/log/acpid 
and /var/log/Xorg.0.log were both huge (acpid being bigger).  
Most of the errors at the end of the Xorg file related to acpid.  
Restarting acpid and emptying that huge log file for acpid got 
KDE working again at regular speed.

This might be enough information for you, or you might not care.  
I don't know.  Feel free to write back if you want to.
