Package: kdm
Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: minor

Since KDE 3.2 was first packaged, I've been seeing an annoying oddity.

Normally, if you use Alt-N (or mouse through the dropdown menu) at the KDM
login screen to drop to a console, KDM starts its normal countdown clock.
If you don't login after a minute or do, it restarts the greeter. The same
occurs after you logout.

The bug is that KDM no longer cares whether you actually login and get
a shell or not. Sixty seconds after showing the console, it /will/ kick
you back to the greeter, even if you were in the middle of typing a command.

Hitting Alt-N again returns you to the same console, with no data lost.

If you're not logged in as root, this is harmless, but freakishly annoying
(dropping to the console every minute). If you're logged in as root,
you can "/etc/init.d/kdm stop" as your first command and will not be
interrupted anymore.

I suspect it's something to do with utmp/wtmp records -- that's how any
sane program would check if somebody's logged in to a given terminal or
not -- but don't know enough about kdm to investigate.
