Package: konqueror
Version: 4:3.5.0-4
Severity: normal

Hi,

It seems that web pages with certain transparent GIF images as the
background image are displayed very slowly.

Here is a simple example of a page where this problem occurs:

    http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/josuomel/tmp/bg/

Such GIF images are actually used on some commercial web sites and the
web sites of some organisations. It is most likely accidental; someone
has edited a GIF and transparency was accidentally left on. The
problem seems to occur even if there are no actual transparent pixels
in the image at all.

In addition to being just annoying, slow rendering of the page causes
some other problems. For some reason, X generates erroneous repeated
keyboard events in this particular case. Here are a couple of
practical examples:

A. Konqueror (with a problematic web page) is running on virtual
desktop 2, and the virtual desktop 3 is currently active. I hit a
shortcut key for switching one virtual desktop to left. Desktop 2 is
displayed. X starts drawing the konqueror window, very slowly. For
some reason, an extra keystroke event is generated, and X switches to
virtual desktop 1.

B. I have 3 tabs, the problematic page is displayed in tab 2, and tab
3 is active. I close the tab 3 by hitting ctrl+w. Tab 3 is closed, tab
2 is displayed, and X starts drawing the page, very slowly. Again, an
extra keystroke event is generated, and tab 2 is closed as well.

Other web browser have no difficulties at all with such web pages.

Best regards,
Jukka Suomela
