Hmm, it seems this happens when the content of the tar.gz are symlinks.
example file is attached, when trying to extract one of the files using
konqueror I get a message box saying:

The file cannot be opened. It is possible that the file format is not
supported.

I am not sure, but maybe this is related to the following change in KTar
(copied from websvn.kde.org), as that is all that changed in upstream
and I don't think debian changes anything in the tar-io-slave.

Oh and of course the target of the symlinks still exist here.
