I think this is an unfortunate wording. It should very likely just serve as a hint, i.e. that you do not need any special syntax. The command is obviously not part of an interactive shell: I tried htop as the command. When I quit it, it also closes the session. An interactive shell would just return to the shell prompt. If anyone wants to file a bug upstream, file one for the documentation.
