To be thorough, I suppose:

~/.kde/share/apps/kmail
~/.kde/share/config/kmail.*

Back them up, of course.  :)

That seems strange.

Could you be more specific about the versions that work and those that don't?  
Also, please attach a backtrace of the crash.

FYI, you can also submit this bug to KDE yourself and then use 
control@bugs.debian.org to set the forwarded tag, which would help take the 
load off the Debian Qt-KDE folks.
