The flashing of the harddrive went away when I
disabled the mediamanager. So that seems to be the
problem. 

When I only have libfam0 installed my selfcompiled 3.5
says its polling and with fam installed it uses fam.
What happens in the 3.4.2 installation I don't know
since there is no debug output.
