I can't reproduce this. Changing the fonts in the Control Center changes the 
font sizes as you would expect. I suspect what you're finding is that when 
you start KDE using 'startx' or xdm, it uses a setting of 100 dpi to render 
fonts, whereas kdm tries to use DDC info to determine your monitor's 'true' 
dpi, and sets your font sizes accordingly. Hence the observed differences 
in font size between using kdm and not. You can force kdm to start KDE with 
a certain dpi value by editing /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc; a setting of 100 would 
probably return your fonts to the expected sizes.

If my theory is incorrect, let me know. Otherwise, if I don't hear from you,
