I checked mixer settings every time and they seemed fine. I tried to change
mixer settings just to make sure, but I couldn't get the sound back. As soon
as I purge the package and restart kde the sound comes back.

I'm using alsa. I tried with both kcontrol sound settings -- auto and alsa,
and the same problem occurred. Mixer settings seem to be the same, regardless
whether libarts1-xine is installed or not.

I use default xine settings. I'll send you answers to other questions shortly.
Cheers,
