These are actually 2 bugs:
1) KNewsTicker does not understand Content-Encoding: gzip, for example. I came across it when I was debugging why the hell freshmeat.net news wasn't displaying correctly. It turned out that freshmeat.net server understands Accept-Encoding: deflate, gzip, blah, blah KNewsTicker is sending and gzips the data prior to sending it. However KNewsTicker overlooks Content-Encoding: gzip, thinks it got some garbage from the server and shows "No articles available"
2) It does not correctly react to HTTP Moved permanently message. This one was generated by jabber.org server using the standard URL that came with KNewsTicker. I think it should pop up some dialogbox asking "Do you want to update the URL in preferences?" or just silently update it.

http KIO slave now supports properly content-encoding and redirections,
so knewsticker should work fine for you.
