When I go back from full screen view I get the page list bar on the left of
the document, but in the Settings menu the equivalent option is
unchecked. So I check it, and nothing happens. I uncheck it, and the
page list bar disappears.

  hi, this is fixed in kghostview 3.3.0, or at least I can't reproduce
  it. please write back if it doesn't work for you.
