Bug#236078: kdm in testing / unstable does not validate passwords

Fresh woody install, new 2.4.25 kernel, apt-get install -t unstable
x-window-system for my geforce4 etc, apt-get install -t testing kde kdm.

Everything is great except that kdm doesn't check my passwords at
login.  I can login as any user, including root, with any password.  I
don't know what I did but a buddy's install with kde/kdm from testing
doesn't do this.  I have done this install from scratch twice with the
same results (ie a fresh debian install with the same results).
