Hi,

I merged the first five patches and made further cleanups/improvements on
top of them. Feel free to review.

I dropped entirely the sixth patch as those changes were not really
needed. Instead I just renamed your "vcs" key into "vcs_extra_links"
that I used to populate a list of links passed to the template of the
panel.
