I am beginning to like the idea less, though I understand the cause.

Since the PTS knows about maintainers and co-maintainers already,
anyway, and updates this information, wouldn't it make more sense to
simply have it send mail to <source>@pts to the subscribers and all
(co-)maintainers, making sure each address is only ever used once?
I see no excuse why a (co-)maintainer would not want to get PTS mail
and expecting co-maintainers to sign up on the PTS was always
a hassle anyway.
