I've been occasionally chasing after MIDI patch sets to try and find a
sane solution, but it seems that free patch sets simply do not
exist. Creating MIDI patch sets is quite an expenditure of effort, so
this isn't overly surprising in hindsight - it's time consuming,
boring, and requires a professional recording studio to get a vaguely
decent one.

I recommend that we operate on the assumption that one will not
appear, and ship timidity configured to run without patches. In this
configuration it is unable to play MIDI files, but can still play
module files (soundtracker, etc), since they embed their
patches. People who have purchased or otherwise acquired a patch set
can configure it appropriately for software MIDI playback. Yeah, it
sucks, but we don't have much choice.

[Whenever any supposedly-free patch sets appear, I can invariably
identify them as unlicensed property of Gravis Inc. on inspection]
