I've taken this project over.  I hacked on Ray's code tonight and got
something working, namely, some DVI's come out in a readable fashion.
It's not nearly ready for production use, but if you want to look at
it, grab it from my home directory on master.  I'd appreciate if people
tested it on their DVI's and told me if it guesses word boundaries wrong.
