Hitting ^C leaves the screen without a cursor.
stty sane didn't help.
Doing a second aaxine and then hitting "q" fixed it.
Terminal was
crxvt-big5 -fm taipei16 -fn -sony-*-16-*-iso8859-1 -im xcin -bg black -fg white -Trxv
