Package: auto-apt
Version: 0.3.20
Severity: important

The file indexing heuristics makes it impossible to locate numerous files.
For instance, try

auto-apt update
auto-apt search pam_appl.h

and you get no replies although a trivial

wget -q --mirror http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/Contents-i386.gz
zgrep -h pam_appl.h ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/Contents-i386.gz

will give you:

usr/include/security/pam_appl.h libdevel/libpam0g-dev
usr/share/doc/libpam-doc/html/pam_appl.html doc/libpam-doc

I would very much like to use auto-apt. I understand that the current
problem lies in the inefficiency of the indexing method. It may be wise
to either choose another method (such as the zgrep above) or accept
that auto-apt is slow and uses large amounts of data. The current
state of thing is not acceptable to me and probably very deceptive to
most users.
